A sad day for Big Blue.<\/p><\/div>\n

We know, we know.\u00a0 It\u2019s been awhile since we\u2019ve posted.\u00a0 You could chalk it up to the general football apathy that is barely<\/span> sweeping the country, or The Machine\u2019s first two picks in our fantasy draft (Odell Beckham and Zeke Elliott) casting a dark cloud over this season (still gonna make the playoffs in that league though, thanks to some savage waiver wire pickups that we arguably should\u2019ve been passing on to you\u2026thanks again, Alvin Kamara).<\/p>\n

Whatever the reason, at approximately 3:32 pm today, The Machine got woke, when we saw the following headlines (followed by an onslaught of texts and tears):\u00a0 New York Giants Bench Eli Manning; Geno Smith to Start on Sunday.\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, we’re woke AF now.<\/p>\n

Are you fucking kidding me?\u00a0 Bench Eli?\u00a0 Make no mistake:\u00a0 The Giant’s season has been an absolute shit show.\u00a0 At 2-9, they are going nowhere.\u00a0 But Eli Manning is the last player on that team to blame.\u00a0 This is nothing more than a desperate move by a head coach and GM to save their jobs, and improve their chances at a higher draft pick (we\u2019ll get to the draft in a second).\u00a0 Think about it:\u00a0 You\u2019re telling me that Geno Smith gives you the best chance to win on Sunday, over Eli Manning, two-time Super Bowl winner and two-time Super Bowl MVP?\u00a0 Geno Smith, the same guy that got his jaw broken by his own teammate<\/a>?\u00a0 And I thought the Bills decision to bench Tyrod was dumb (and it was).\u00a0 This is far worse, and will go down as one of the worst decisions after made on a football field.<\/p>\n

Hey Ben, thanks for taking the heat off me, brah! #billsmafia<\/p><\/div>\n

Don\u2019t be fooled.\u00a0 The Giants (and ownership is in on this too) are making Eli the scapegoat.\u00a0 They\u2019re throwing him under the bus because they know they can.\u00a0 Because Eli is too humble and good-natured to play dirty and tell them to fuck off.\u00a0 They want you to believe it\u2019s an aging Eli that caused this season to collapse.\u00a0 But that\u2019s total bullshit.\u00a0 The reason this season (and next season) will collapse, and the reason the Giants have missed the playoffs 5 out of the last 6 years, is because of an organizational failure to draft players and build a team.<\/p>\n

There’s blood on all your hands.<\/p><\/div>\n

The Giants have wasted the last 5 years of Eli\u2019s career, while he\u2019s done nothing but go out there every day, without complaint, and do his job.\u00a0 The Giants should build this team around him.\u00a0 Literally.\u00a0 He is, at best, a severely immobile quarterback. \u00a0You\u2019d think then, that the smart\/right\/glaringly fucking obvious thing to do would be to build an offensive line that would protect him.\u00a0 Give him that pocket, and time, he needs to throw, and be able to run block to keep defenses honest.\u00a0 You build your team (and offense line) in the draft, and, when done right, it gives your offense the foundation to succeed (see Dallas Cowboys).\u00a0 And this is where the Giants front office has failed miserably.<\/p>\n

The core of any team should be guys in years 4 through 7.\u00a0 Players that have played through their rookie contract and are rounding into their primes.\u00a0 That\u2019s how championship teams are built.\u00a0 Draft first, then supplement as needed through free agency.\u00a0 Anyway, let\u2019s look and see how the \u201ccore\u201d of the Giants are doing. \u00a0Between 2010 and 2013, the Giants drafted a total of 29 players.\u00a0 Care to guess how many of those players are still on the team?\u00a0 2.\u00a0 Yes, two, and one of them has a lobster claw for a hand.\u00a0 Seriously, here they are:<\/p>\n

2010 \u2013 1 (JPP)<\/p>\n

2011 \u2013 0<\/p>\n

2012 \u2013 0<\/p>\n

2013 \u2013 1 (Pugh)<\/p>\n

That\u2019s it.\u00a0 What should be the core of this team is non-existent.\u00a0 Jerry Reese and co. failed time after time.\u00a0 Several of those players aren\u2019t even in the league anymore.\u00a0 The only constant during this time, and the prior 210 games, has been Eli Manning.\u00a0 Dependable, tough, professional.\u00a0 He gave the Giants constant stability at the most important position.\u00a0 He has started every single game since his career began in 2004, second only to Brett Farve in most consecutive starts.\u00a0 And he delivered (twice) on the largest stage, beating the unbeatable Patriots (twice).<\/p>\n

How soon we forget.<\/p><\/div>\n

Many people try to discredit Eli\u2019s contributions to those Super Bowl winning teams, pointing to how great the defenses were, or how \u201clucky\u201d Eli got.\u00a0 That\u2019s all revisionist history.\u00a0 Don\u2019t forget:\u00a0 the Giants were double digit underdogs in both those Super Bowls.\u00a0 Their defense was good, but not great, and sorry, luck may get you one Super Bowl, but it ain\u2019t getting you two.\u00a0 Eli stepped up his game when it mattered most.<\/p>\n

Captain Clutch.<\/p><\/div>\n

Perhaps the best quality about him is his unassuming nature, and unflappable resolve.\u00a0 Could you imagine if the Giants didn\u2019t make the trade to get Eli in 2004, and instead stayed with Phillip Rivers?\u00a0 Do you think for a second Rivers would survive in New York?\u00a0 Under the constant pressure in the biggest market?\u00a0 Puh-lease.\u00a0 Rivers barely withstood the “tough” San Diego journalists, while throwing tantrums on the sidelines and shit-talking the other team.\u00a0 Eli?\u00a0 Not a chance.\u00a0 He always rose above the pettiness.\u00a0 Never got too high when things were good, and never got too low when things were bad.\u00a0 That\u2019s what you want from your starting quarterback.<\/p>\n

Point is: you don\u2019t do this to someone like Eli Manning.\u00a0 If you\u2019re going to move on from him, you do it with the same dignity and grace that he gave you his entire career.\u00a0 Wait until the season\u2019s over, and then mutually part ways.\u00a0 Apparently, McAdoo offered Eli the chance to start, and then get replaced, in order to keep the streak alive.\u00a0 Manning declined, saying, \u201cMy feeling is that if you are going to play the other guys, play them.\u00a0 Starting just to keep the streak going and knowing you won\u2019t finish the game and have a chance to win it is pointless to me, and it tarnishes the streak.\u201d\u00a0 Class act.<\/p>\n

This is just a complete slap in the face.\u00a0 Clearly, Geno Smith is not the future of this franchise, so why do this now?\u00a0 It makes absolutely no sense.\u00a0 It has completely enraged the fan base.\u00a0 It has completely enraged former players.\u00a0 People are calling for McAdoo (and Reese, who honestly should\u2019ve been let go when Tom Coughlin was unceremoniously shown the door) to get fired, but I\u2019m here to tell you that McAdoo won\u2019t get fired.\u00a0 Reese, on the other hand, should get the boot.\u00a0 He can no longer live on the fumes of his one good draft (\u201907).\u00a0 And drafting Odell Beckham means squat if no one has time to throw him the ball.<\/p>\n

This kid’s definitely getting his ass kicked at school tomorrow.\u00a0 That’s on you too.<\/p><\/div>\n

So with the entire fanbase up in arms, former players upset<\/a>, and Mike Francesa definitely pissed,\u00a0<\/a>how is it possible that McAdoo stays?\u00a0 He just benched the greatest New York Giant of all time (not named LT).\u00a0 Of course he\u2019s going to get fired\u2026unless [affixes tinfoil hat] he did this to save<\/em> <\/strong>his job.\u00a0 Here me out. \u00a0Obviously, this decision wasn\u2019t made without input from the Mara family.\u00a0 Parting with Eli was bound to happen, and it was always going to be somewhat messy.\u00a0 So what if ownership found a way to make this unpopular decision without taking any blame.\u00a0 What if they told McAdoo that, we\u2019ll keep you around for next year, but you have to take the heat for getting rid of Eli.\u00a0 That can\u2019t be on us.\u00a0 The tradeoff is you get to keep your multi-million dollar job, and if you do well next year, the fickle fans will let bygones be bygones.<\/p>\n

And let\u2019s be honest, as much as I hate to type it:\u00a0 Eli\u2019s played his last game for the Giants.\u00a0 There\u2019s no way to come back from this.\u00a0 The Giants are now officially in Suck for Sam mode, and whatever qb they select with their (likely) top 3 pick is going to start immediately, or they\u2019ll have some schlep start (ahem, Geno Smith), who will be pulled for the new guy.\u00a0 Eli should waive his no trade clause and head south to Jacksonville (darkhorse:\u00a0 Denver) and finish out his career with Tom Coughlin.\u00a0 Two guys with class, dignity, and two Super Bowl rings.<\/p>\n

As for the Giants, they just kicked a Hall of Fame quarterback (don\u2019t even try to debate me on that shit) to the curb.\u00a0 For Geno Smith.\u00a0 They get exactly what they deserve.<\/p>\n
